Edison, New Jersey- Edison has a vibrant soccer culture, and one man has been at the heart of that development for decades – Spencer Rockman. This longtime Edison resident and 1968 graduate of Metuchen High School has dedicated his life to bringing the beautiful game to the community.
Spencer Rockman’s passion for soccer extended far beyond the playing field. A true believer in the power of sport to develop character and life skills, he has dedicated himself to creating a soccer environment that is both fun and focused on skill development.
In the early 1970s, when soccer was still a relatively unknown sport in the United States, Rockman began his soccer journey teaching the game out of his Good Humor ice cream truck, bringing the sport to children across the Edison/Metuchen area. His passion was infectious, and soon, the demand for organized soccer grew.
In 1971 Rockman started Rovers International Soccer offering a unique blend of dynamic skill-building games and a “kid-friendly” atmosphere. In 1974, his vision and dedication led to the creation of the Edison United Soccer Association (EUSA). The non-profit organization has become a cornerstone of youth soccer in Edison. Under his leadership as President for 13 years, EUSA flourished.

Rockman’s belief that soccer teaches valuable life skills and values is a core philosophy woven throughout Rovers International and EUSA. Through the sport, players learn about teamwork, dedication, sportsmanship, and the joy of competition while developing relationships that last a lifetime.
Rockman’s heart is clearly as big as his dedication to coaching kids. Over two decades, he and his wife Audrey have opened their home to a remarkable 30 foster children, providing them with stability and love. His generosity doesn’t stop there – he also dedicates his time and soccer skills to a multitude of causes.
From ‘Kicks for Kids with Cancer and Blood Disorders’ to the Children’s Tumor Foundation, Hands for Hope Food Pantry and supporting new Ethiopian immigrants, his tireless efforts are an inspiration. Demonstrating how one person can truly impact a community and change the lives of many.
Rockman’s contributions to soccer and our community have been recognized beyond Edison. He co-founded the Garden State Soccer League and has been recognized for his work with inductions into the NJ Youth Soccer Association Hall of Fame (2013) and the NJ Soccer Association Hall of Fame (2017).
In an era where youth sports have become dominated by expensive travel teams and elite academies, Spencer Rockman is not only a role model for his players, but parents and fellow coaches alike. He remains unwavering in his belief that the essence of the beautiful game lies in fostering a love of the sport, emphasizing skill development, and making it accessible to all.
