Edison, NJ – Steven Fulop, the current mayor of Jersey City and candidate for governor has come a long way since graduating from J.P. Stevens High School in 1995. Fulop’s journey is a testament to ambition, hard work, and the foundation that was built right here in Edison.

Fulop’s roots start here, where he was born to Romanian Jewish immigrants. His father, raised in Israel, eventually journeyed to the US and alongside his wife, ran a delicatessen for over four decades. His mother’s parents, Holocaust survivors, were imprisoned in Auschwitz.

After graduating from J.P. Stevens, Fulop went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts from Binghamton University, a Masters of Business Administration from New York University Stern School of Business and a Masters of Public Administration from Colombia University School of International and Public Affairs.

The events of 9/11 deeply impacted Fulop, then working at Goldman Sachs. Driven by a sense of duty, he left his very lucrative Wall Street career to join the United States Marines. His service included a deployment to Iraq in 2003 with the 6th Engineer Support Battalion Reserve unit. This experience profoundly shaped his commitment to public service and his understanding of the sacrifices made by those who serve.

In 2005 while still serving in his marine reserve unit, Fulop won his first election as a Jersey City councilman. His focus on revitalizing neglected neighborhoods and fiscal responsibility resonated with voters. Eight years later, he defied expectations by unseating an incumbent mayor, establishing himself as a major force in New Jersey politics.

As mayor of Jersey City, Fulop has overseen a period of economic growth and development. He has also been a leading voice on important issues like affordable housing, infrastructure investment, and gun violence prevention. In 2014, Fulop was recognized for his achievements by his alma mater and inducted into the J.P. Stevens High School Hall of Fame.

Now, Fulop seeks to bring his leadership experience to the highest office in the state. His campaign for governor has already raised over $3 million for the gubernatorial primary and racked up the endorsement of over 30 mayors making him the early frontrunner to be the next Governor of New Jersey.

A local community feels immense pride when one of their own achieves great things. It proves that big dreams can come true regardless of your background, fostering a sense of pride and togetherness. Fulop’s success is a symbol to the students of Edison to dream big because anything is possible. You can learn more about Steven Fulop and his campaign at https://stevenfulop.com
