The Edison Police Department is deeply saddened to announce the passing of Lieutenant Donald Ship, a dedicated officer who served the community with unwavering commitment and compassion. Lieutenant Ship, a lifelong resident of Edison, dedicated his entire career to giving back to the community that raised him.
Lieutenant Ship’s law enforcement journey began as a Police Officer at Kean University before he transferred to the Edison Police Department on January 5, 2011. During his time in the patrol bureau, he was known as a reliable officer and a mentor to new hires as a field training officer.
On October 1, 2020, Lieutenant Ship was promoted to Sergeant and entrusted with relaunching the Community Policing Unit. His tireless efforts and enthusiasm played a crucial role in strengthening the relationship between the police department and the community. He spearheaded numerous charitable initiatives, providing essential support to families in need, including warm meals, furniture, and Christmas toys. His dedication to the community earned him the respect and admiration of residents of all ages.
Lieutenant Ship’s problem-solving abilities and warm smile were well-known throughout the community. He was always ready to lend a helping hand and find solutions to any challenge.
On February 14, 2023, Lieutenant Ship was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant and assumed the role of Watch Commander for Patrol Squad A.
The Edison Police Department extends its deepest condolences to Lieutenant Ship’s family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time. Funeral arrangements will be announced in the near future.
Lieutenant Ship’s legacy of service and dedication to the Edison community will be remembered and cherished. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
