Edison Approves $28.5 Million Bond, Scraps Controversial Restaurant Purchase

EDISON, NJ – In a series of significant moves, the Edison Township Council has authorized a substantial $28.5 million bond ordinance to fund critical infrastructure projects and equipment upgrades. Concurrently, the council has abandoned a contentious plan to acquire the Jade Dynasty restaurant for $5 million, a proposal that had sparked public outrage due to potential conflicts of interest and inflated costs.

The approved bond ordinance, totaling $28,475,000, will allocate funds to a wide array of initiatives across multiple departments. Key investments include:

  • $1 million for a new fire engine/pumper
  • $530,000 for solar-powered feedback signs at various intersections
  • $8.25 million for road paving and resurfacing
  • $4.35 million for Public Works vehicles and equipment
  • $6.875 million for park improvements

The bond ordinance reflects the council’s commitment to enhancing public safety, modernizing infrastructure, and improving the quality of life for residents.

In a dramatic reversal, the council has scrapped its plans to purchase the Jade Dynasty restaurant on Amboy Avenue. The proposed acquisition had drawn sharp criticism due to the property’s listed sale price of $2.2 million, significantly lower than the $5 million originally being allocated for the acquisition. The fact that Councilman Joseph Coyle was the listing agent for the property further fueled concerns about conflicts of interest and lack of transparency.

Residents and fellow council members voiced strong opposition to the purchase, questioning its necessity and financial prudence. Business Administrator Sonia Alves-Viveiros confirmed the abandonment of the plan, citing community feedback and changing priorities.
