Residents dismayed as Local Artists Displaced for “Mayor’s Gallery”
After over two decades of showcasing local talent, the Edison Art Society has been abruptly evicted from its gallery space on the second floor of the Edison Municipal Building. The move has sparked outrage among residents and artists alike, who were shocked to learn the space will now be used as the “Mayor’s Gallery” to display photos of the mayor and his projects.
“It’s a slap in the face to the artistic community,” declared Gloria Dittman Past President of the Edison Arts Society. “This gallery has been a cultural hub for over 25 years, showcasing the incredible talent we have right here in Edison. To replace it with the “Mayor’s Gallery” is simply appalling.”
The Edison Art Society, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting the arts in the community, has been a fixture in the Municipal Building for over 25 years. The gallery provided a valuable platform for local artists to exhibit their work, fostering creativity and enriching the cultural landscape of Edison.
“We were blindsided by this decision,” said Elizabeth Hahn President of the Edison Art Society. “We were given very little notice and no clear explanation. To say we are disappointed is an understatement. This gallery was more than just a space to hang paintings; it was a place for artists to connect, collaborate, and inspire.”
The abrupt eviction has left the Art Society looking to find a new home. Fortunately, there may be a silver lining. The North Edison Library has emerged as a potential new venue for the displaced artists.
“The Director of the Library Board said they have room for the the Edison Arts Society and would love to have them,” said Councilwoman Margot Harris who is working on finding them a new home. “We believe in the power of art to enrich lives and foster community, and we are eager to explore ways to support the Edison Art Society.”
Democratic Councilman Rich Brescher who has announced he is running for Mayor in the June 3rd primary stated, “This is not the first time we have seen Mayor Joshi play politics with non profit organizations who contribute so much to our town. He’s done it with funding for youth sports, after school programs funded by the township and now the Edison Arts Society that has been a pillar of our community for over 25 years. When elected, we will reinstate the Edison Arts Society’s gallery on day one and remain steadfast in our commitment to supporting the arts in our community.”
While the future remains uncertain, the artists and residents of Edison are determined to ensure that the legacy of the Edison Art Society continues. They are rallying together, advocating for the importance of art in the community and seeking support for their displaced organization. This situation highlights the ongoing struggle to preserve spaces for arts and culture in the face of competing priorities.

I am so happy to have left Edison after living there for over 40 years. Moved to the south, Georgia, and learned how to live in a town where people say hello when they pass you on the street. Where there is even a baseball field for disabled children established and supported by the town n its people. Such a different life style. A well kept town that is clean n houses are kept neat and yards are picture perfect! People care bc we know our local leaders care about their people and listen when we suggest an idea that will improve the town so our children learn to respect it as well! Sorry Edison, your leaders are selfish! Really, the Mayer needs a gallery!!! Take care of your community and stop patting yourself on the back with a gallery. Let someone else praise you. Do your job in the community and you will be remembered and won’t need a gallery for that!!!
