Rusty Swartz had a remarkable journey, starting from his early years. He grew up in Edison where he developed a passion for sports at a young age. His talent on the football field quickly became evident, and he excelled in high school, earning recognition for his abilities as a football player.
A 1992 graduate of Edison High School, Swartz was a punishing running back and linebacker on the 1991 undefeated 11-0 Central Jersey Group 4 state champion Eagles. Swartz earned first-team All-County and All-State honors in 1991 as a co-captain. He went on to star at Rutgers University in the early 1990s. He was one of the most dominant football players ever to put on an Edison Eagles football uniform. If you saw him play you never forgot. Every play 100% maximum effort. No plays off, ever.
Edison Coach Brian Calantoni, affectionately known as “Coach Cal”, played alongside Swartz on that memorable 1991 team. The anniversary of Swartz’s passing serves as a poignant reminder for Coach Cal. He shares, “I use the date of Rusty’s death every year to remind our young men how fragile life is and how quickly it can change. We are teaching these young men not only to be good football players, but to be good people.” September 10th, 2024, marks a quarter-century since that day, a solemn milestone that underscores the importance of Coach Cal’s message.
After high school, Rusty committed to playing football at Rutgers University, where he continued to showcase his skills. He played a pivotal role in the team’s defense, becoming known for his tenacity and leadership on the field. His impressive performance in 1995, marked by a team leading five sacks, helped solidify his reputation as a standout player.
Swartz’s contributions on the field as a defensive player left a lasting impression on his teammates and coaches. His leadership, work ethic, and dedication to the game inspired others to push themselves harder and strive for excellence.
Outside of sports, Rusty Swartz was known for his community involvement and commitment to giving back. He participated in local charities and initiatives aimed at supporting youth programs, hoping to inspire the next generation.
