Metuchen Breaks Ground on 272-Unit Luxury Apartment Complex Amidst Overdevelopment Concerns

Construction has officially commenced on The Kempson, a 272-unit luxury apartment complex set to transform the 22-acre Gulton property on Durham Avenue in Metuchen. The project, developed by Baltimore-based Klein Enterprises, is expected to deliver in late 2025, marks a significant addition to the borough’s housing landscape, but not without raising concerns about overdevelopment among some residents.

The Kempson, located at 212 Durham Avenue, promises to deliver a modern living experience with high-end amenities and finishes. The development will feature a mix of studio, one-, two-, and three-bedroom apartments, catering to a diverse range of residents.

However, the project has sparked debate among community members who feel that Metuchen is experiencing a wave of overdevelopment. Critics argue that the influx of new construction projects is putting a strain on existing infrastructure and altering the character of the borough.

“Metuchen’s charm, once defined by its quaint streets and historic homes, is being eroded by unchecked development. The influx of multi-family housing threatens to erase the small-town feel that made this community so special for so many years” said local resident Mike Loreti who lives in the Beacon Hill section of town.

Despite these concerns, developers and borough officials maintain that The Kempson will bring a much-needed boost to the local economy, creating jobs and generating tax revenue. They also emphasize the project’s potential to attract new residents and businesses to Metuchen.

As construction progresses on The Kempson, it remains to be seen how the project will ultimately impact the community. While the development promises to bring new housing options and economic benefits to Metuchen, it also raises important questions about the balance between growth and preservation in the borough.

Additional details about The Kempson, including specific amenities and leasing information, will be released as the project nears completion.
