EDISON, NJ – A significant milestone was reached on February 24th as state and local officials, alongside library dignitaries, celebrated the groundbreaking of the North Edison Public Library’s long-awaited expansion and renovation project. The event marked the official start of a 15-month transformation aimed at creating a modern, accessible, and community-focused hub for residents of all ages.
“We are currently celebrating 96 years in Edison Township… and this is a momentous occasion in the history of the Edison Public Library,” stated Director Allan M. Kleiman, MLS, during his welcoming remarks.
The project, funded by the Edison Public Library’s Board of Trustees Capital Funds and a $1.5 million matching grant from the NJ State Library Construction Bond Act, will significantly enhance the library’s offerings. The building at 777 Grove Avenue will see an additional 4,500 square feet, featuring an expanded adult reading space, a renovated and enlarged children’s room, a larger community innovation lab/makerspace, and a bigger meeting room. Additionally, a community art and exhibit gallery and an outdoor rain garden will be added.
Edison Township Council President Margot Harris, who previously served as a liaison to the library, expressed her excitement for the project and the ongoing renovations at the Main Library. “This is really exciting and with the renovations going on at the Main Library… We are looking forward to what lies ahead,” she said.
The contract for construction was awarded to Pal-Pro Builders, LLC of Garfield, NJ, managed by Mark Berkowsky and Associates of Cranbury, NJ.
The North Edison Branch closed its doors on March 1st to begin the 15-month construction period. To ensure continued service, a temporary facility at 1907 Oak Tree Road will open in mid-March.
“This library means so much to this North Edison community,” said Kleiman. “It has served three generations of library users and with this renovation and expansion it will continue to serve generations to come.”
