SOUTH RIVER, NJ – A devastating four-alarm fire ripped through a four-family home on Main Street over the weekend, leaving 15 residents displaced and the building uninhabitable, according to Mayor Peter Guindi.

The fire broke out around 10:03 p.m. on Saturday night at 160-162 Main Street, situated between Jackson Street and Wilcox Avenue. Thankfully, all residents were safely evacuated from the building.

A police officer who bravely assisted in the evacuation efforts was treated at the scene for smoke inhalation, but is reported to be doing well, Mayor Guindi confirmed.

Approximately 70 firefighters from South River and neighboring communities responded to the blaze. Their tireless efforts brought the fire under control around 12:30 a.m.

“I am deeply grateful to the firefighters and police who put their lives on the line to do what they do, saving lives and trying to protect property,” stated Mayor Guindi, himself an active borough firefighter. “It’s a challenging job, but it’s what we’ve committed to do.”

The Red Cross was also on scene to provide immediate assistance to the displaced residents. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
