The Black Poster Project: Raising Awareness Through Lives Lost to Addiction

0

Edison, NJ – A powerful event is coming to Edison this weekend, aimed at raising awareness about substance use disorders and supporting those affected by addiction. The Black Poster Project, a moving display memorializing individuals lost to overdose, will be featured at the Edison Senior Center on Saturday, October 5th, from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM.

This event, held in partnership with Edison Township and the Edison Police Department, seeks to:

  • Increase community awareness of substance use disorders and the devastating impact of addiction.
  • Demystify the stigma surrounding substance abuse and encourage open conversations about this critical issue.
  • Provide support to families and individuals struggling with substance use disorders.
  • Offer free Narcan and Narcan training to equip community members with life-saving tools.

The Black Poster Project was born out of tragedy. After losing her son Scott to an overdose, Dee Gillen created the project in 2019 to provide a visual representation of the lives lost to addiction. What began as a small display for an overdose awareness event has grown significantly, sadly reflecting the ongoing opioid crisis. Each poster tells a story, a life cut short by addiction, serving as a powerful reminder of the human cost of this epidemic.

This event is free and open to the public. Attendees will have the opportunity to view the posters, learn more about substance use disorders, and connect with resources and support services. The presence of the Edison Police Department underscores the collaborative approach to addressing this issue within the community.
