Two Teens Arrested in Violent Attempted Carjacking

EDISON, NJ – Two Rahway teenagers have been arrested following a brazen attempted carjacking outside a busy Edison grocery store last week. Police are still seeking a third suspect believed to be involved in the incident.

The 16-year-old and 17-year-old suspects, whose names are withheld due to their age, were apprehended on Wednesday. The 16-year-old faces several charges including attempted carjacking, aggravated assault, burglary, conspiracy, hindering apprehension, and resisting arrest by flight. The 17-year-old faces charges of attempted carjacking, aggravated assault, burglary, and criminal conspiracy.

Both teens are currently detained at the Middlesex County Juvenile Detention Center awaiting a hearing.

Edison Police Chief Thomas Bryan commended detectives and patrol officers for their dedicated work leading to the arrests. NJ Transit and Rahway Police Departments collaborated with Edison authorities to identify the suspects, with NJ Transit video capturing them at the MetroPark train station and a Rahway school resource officer assisting in identification.

The attempted carjacking occurred around 4:55 p.m. on March 15 at the Patel Brothers grocery store on Oak Tree Road. Surveillance video shows three individuals approaching a Bentley SUV and physically dragging the driver from the vehicle. The suspects attempted to flee with the SUV, but the driver, who endured head injuries during the struggle, maintained possession of the key fob.
