Edison, NJ – A major water main break near the Ben Franklin School continues to disrupt residents, even as water service is intermittently restored. The 20-inch main ruptured late Christmas night, leaving many homes and businesses without water for almost 2 days.
While water has been turned back on for a significant number of residents, the situation remains uncertain. The fix for the broken main is still underway, and there’s no guarantee that water service will remain stable. As of 8:00pm the water is flowing from the broken main the same as it was at 7:00am this morning.
Officials are unable to provide an estimated time for full water service restoration and it is unlikely repairs will be completed by morning.
Adding to the ongoing challenges, local plumber Mike Plodzien, reported on social media that he has received at least three calls from residents whose water meters began leaking after the water was restored. He emphasized that these leaks are the responsibility of the Edison Water Utility to repair. Residents experiencing leaking water meters are urged to contact the Edison Water Utility immediately.
A boil water advisory has been issued for the affected area; all residents should boil their water for at least one minute before consuming it or using it for cooking.
This is a developing story. Updates will be provided as more information becomes available. Mayor Joshi and Chief of Staff Bob Diehl did not respond to request for comment.
