Edison’s future medical leaders are getting a powerful head start! John P. Stevens High School is thrilled to announce the launch of its groundbreaking Biomedical Science Academy, a rigorous, hands-on program designed to propel students toward top-tier universities and fulfilling careers in the rapidly expanding healthcare sector.

This innovative academy addresses the surging demand for skilled professionals in the healthcare industry, which is projected to generate 2 million new jobs in the next decade. Recognizing the need to equip Edison’s brightest minds with a competitive, cutting-edge education, the academy will offer a unique learning experience.

“The launch of the Biomedical Science Academy is a tremendous success for our students, offering an unparalleled opportunity to excel in the burgeoning field of biomedical sciences. This isn’t just a program for John P. Stevens students; it’s a testament to our commitment to providing exceptional academic pathways to all students within the Edison School District. We are building a future where every student has the chance to thrive, regardless of their high school” said Board of Education member Shannon Peng.

What Sets the Biomedical Science Academy Apart?

The program provides a comprehensive curriculum featuring:

    • Advanced Coursework: Students will tackle challenging subjects like AP Biology, AP Chemistry, and AP Physics C, laying a strong foundation in biomedical sciences.
    • Real-World Experience: Through work-based learning, mentorships, and a culminating senior Capstone Project, students will gain invaluable practical experience and exposure to the professional world.
    • Exclusive Learning Community: With a limited cohort of just 24 students, the academy fosters a focused and supportive learning environment tailored to medical, research, and healthcare pathways.

This selective program is open to Edison 8th graders currently enrolled in Geometry who have maintained honor roll status throughout 7th and 8th grade. Admission is based on a holistic review of qualifications, including:

    • Grades
    • NJSLA scores
    • Linkit! Assessment scores
    • Science placement test (administered in science class on March 10, 2025)
    • Teacher recommendation
    • Application
    • Interview (if selected)

    Important Dates:

    • Application Window: March 3 โ€“ March 14, 2025
    • Science Placement Test: March 10, 2025
    • Interviews: Weeks of March 17 and March 24
    • Admission Decisions: March 28th

    Curriculum Highlights:

The academy’s curriculum is designed to provide a deep dive into biomedical sciences. For example, 9th grade students will engage in AP Biology, Intro to Biomedical Science, Algebra II H, English I H, US History I H, PE, World Language, and an elective. Advanced topics will include Anatomy & Physiology, Histology, Genetics, Microbiology, and Epidemiology. Senior year will be highlighted by the Work-Based Learning/Mentorship and Capstone Project.

    A Community Effort:

This achievement is the result of dedicated collaboration and hard work. A special acknowledgment goes to the curriculum committee, led by Shannon Peng, for their outstanding contributions. The district also expresses gratitude to the administration team for their close partnership and the board for allocating funds to upgrade labs and restore the biology lab.

This Biomedical Science Academy, alongside the new Allied Health track at EHS, represents the first of many exciting academic pathways planned for Edison students. The district is committed to expanding STEM education and introducing further pathways in fields such as Computer Science/AI, Business, and Pre-law. Stay tuned for more exciting developments!
