Edison, New Jersey – In a heated meeting on March 13th, 2024, the Edison Town Council stirred controversy by approving a $144,000 contract for a website redesign. The contract was awarded to a company with known ties to Mayor Joshi, despite the bid being significantly higher than competing offers.
The website project’s substantial cost drew criticism, with allegations of favoritism and misuse of public funds. Council members Patel, Coyle, Poyner and Schmuel approved awarding the contract to Xduce, a company owned by Jayesh Dave. Dave is known as a friend and supporter of the Mayor Joshi’s re-election campaign. Xduce’s bid of $144k was notably higher than several other qualified firms, which offered bids of $71.5k, $74.3k, and $39.6k.
Further connections raising concerns are Jayesh Dave’s wife, Amita Dave, filed to run for District 35 committee person on March 27th, 2023 with the support of Mayor Sam Joshi whose campaign manager, Saketa R. Chadalavada, notarized the petition with Notary Commission #50124293.
The most dramatic moment of the meeting came when Councilman Ajay Patil, a vocal opponent of the contract, offered a surprising solution. “If you allow me and you reject this tonight, I will use my 30 years of IT experience and I will redevelop this website free of cost for the taxpayer,” he declared.
Councilman Patil’s offer highlights his deep frustration with the council’s decision and a determination to protect the interests of Edison residents. His background in information technology gives weight to his promise.
The council’s approval of the contract is likely to face a strong public backlash. Residents are expected to question the council’s judgment, particularly amid Councilman Patil’s generous alternative. The controversy could raise concerns about transparency and accountability within the town’s government.
Mayor Joshi’s office has yet to release a statement regarding the controversial contract. Their response will be closely watched, as it could determine whether the public outcry escalates or the matter is laid to rest.
The Edison website controversy serves as a cautionary tale about the importance of transparent procurement processes in local government. It also highlights the potential for skilled individuals within the community to step forward and offer alternative solutions in the interest of the public good.
