Edison softball showcased a dominant performance on Thursday, handily defeating the Piscataway Varsity Chiefs with a final score of 12-1. While Piscataway managed to draw first blood in the opening inning, Edison quickly responded and never looked back, overwhelming the Chiefs with a potent offense and solid pitching.
The Chiefs jumped ahead early in the top of the first inning when Sam Venturi connected for a single, driving in the game’s first run. However, Edison’s response was swift and decisive. In the bottom half of the inning, Kailyn Harkins hit a triple, bringing two runners home and giving Edison a 2-1 lead they would not relinquish.
Edison continued to build their lead in the bottom of the third inning, capitalizing on Piscataway miscues and timely hitting. An error by the Chiefs opened the door for a flurry of runs. Harkins followed with a single down the right field line, Olivia Shourt grounded out to score another, Nalini Parekh singled to the right side, and Casey Della Fave grounded out, each contributing a run to extend Edison’s lead.
Callie DiBisceglie was stellar on the mound for Edison, earning the victory. The starting pitcher allowed just three hits and one unearned run over three innings, while striking out two and issuing no walks. For Piscataway, Venturi took the loss, surrendering 12 runs (seven earned) on 12 hits, with one strikeout and four walks in her four innings of work. Jenna Fugate provided excellent relief for Edison, pitching two scoreless innings, allowing no hits, and impressively striking out five batters without a single walk.
Edison’s offense was firing on all cylinders, racking up a total of 12 hits. Harkins, Fugate, Shourt, Kaylin Kline, and DiBisceglie each collected two hits for the victorious Edison squad. Harkins, Fugate, and Shourt were the key run producers, each driving in three runs.
Despite the loss, Venturi led the Piscataway offense with one run batted in, going 1-for-2 on the day. Mia Salgado and Juliana Mena also contributed with one hit apiece for the Chiefs.
Ultimately, Edison’s potent offense, coupled with strong pitching performances from DiBisceglie and Fugate, proved too much for Piscataway to handle, resulting in a comfortable 12-1 victory for the home team. Edison’s next game is at home on 4/22 at 4pm.
