EDISON, NJ – Robert Roma’s go-ahead double in the fifth inning propelled third-seeded Edison to a 4-2 victory over 14th-seeded Sayreville in the first round of the Central Jersey, Group 4 Tournament on Tuesday. The Eagles (16-10) utilized timely hitting and stellar relief pitching to overcome the Bombers (10-15) in a tightly contested affair at home.

The game remained deadlocked at 2-2 until the bottom of the fifth when Roma, who finished the day with two hits, delivered a RBI double to break the tie. Edison added an insurance run in the sixth inning to solidify their lead and secure the win.

Edison’s bullpen was instrumental in shutting down Sayreville’s offense. Ray Tavarez was dominant in relief, tossing 3⅓ shutout innings, striking out four and issuing no walks. Dom Innocenti also contributed significantly, striking out three in 1⅔ scoreless innings.

Sayreville initially seized the lead, scoring single runs in the first and third innings to go up 2-1. Jarret Intili led the Bombers’ attack, going 2-for-3, while Andrew Provenza reached base twice with a hit and a walk.

For Edison, Dom Innocenti not only shined on the mound but also at the plate, contributing a triple and scoring two runs. Anthony Calantoni went 1-for-2 with a walk and crossed the plate twice, while Sam Kentos added an RBI single.

With the victory, Edison advances to the quarterfinals, where they will host 11th-seeded Franklin on Thursday at 4 PM. Franklin defeated sixth-seeded East Brunswick in their first-round matchup.
