Edison Library Board Appointments Back on Council Agenda

After being pulled from the December 23rd meeting agenda, a resolution to appoint two new members to the Edison Library Board of Trustees is back on the table. Resolution R.717-122024, which seeks to appoint District 40 Democratic Committeewoman Pallavi Kabadi and District 5 Democratic Committeewoman Rinki Singh to the board, will be discussed at the Township Council’s work session scheduled for Monday, January 6, 2025 at 6:00pm.

Critics argued that replacing established and well-respected figures like President Pat Massey and Vice President Sue O’Neill with Democratic Committeewoman Pallavi Kabadi and Rinki Singh, that it appeared to be a move aimed at securing Democratic Committee support for next years primary election rather than prioritizing the selection of the most qualified candidates.

If approved, Kabadi and Singh will each serve five-year terms on the board. The resolution cites N.J.S.A. 40:54-9, which outlines procedures for appointing library board members, and Municipal Code §2-97.1, which adopts those procedures for Edison Township.

The Edison Library Board of Trustees is responsible for overseeing the operation and management of the township’s library system. This includes setting policies, approving budgets, and advocating for library services within the community.

The upcoming work session where the resolution will be discussed, is open to the public. Residents are encouraged to attend and share their thoughts with the council.
