Edison Sports Building Adds Another $561,867.53, Total Cost Nears $18 Million

Edison, NJ โ€“ The financial pressures on the Edison Jets Sports Building project continue to mount, with two new resolutions on Wednesday’s Township Council agenda for $561,867.53. The increase will push the total cost of the facility to a staggering $$17,716,620.70. These latest requests, for specialized flooring and turf tiles, highlight the ongoing “cost skyrocket” that has plagued the project.

The escalating expenses have become a recurring theme, drawing concern from residents and council members alike as the building’s initial budget appears to be a distant memory. The two resolutions on the agenda for Wednesday’s meeting are:

    • RESOLUTION R5-04490: Awarding Contract to TGG Floors (The Gillespie Group, Inc.) for Multi-Purpose Flooring This resolution seeks to approve a contract with TGG Floors for the installation of multi-purpose flooring at a cost not to exceed $385,079.53. The contract is being pursued through the Hunterdon County Educational Services Commission Cooperative Purchasing Program. Funds for this expenditure are certified as available in Account No. C-04-24-2203-101-002, designated for Public Works Acquisition of Furniture, Fixtures, and Equipment.
    • RESOLUTION R5-04583: Authorizing Contract to FieldTurf USA, Inc. for Turf Tiles The second resolution requests authorization for a contract with FieldTurf USA, Inc. for the purchase of turf tiles, with a price tag not to exceed $176,788.00. This contract is being facilitated through the Educational Services Commission of New Jersey’s cooperative pricing system. Similar to the flooring resolution, funds are certified as available in Account No. C-04-24-2203-101-002, also for the Acquisition of Furniture, Fixtures, and Equipment.

When combined, these two resolutions represent an additional $561,867.53 in expenditures for the Edison Jets Sports Building. These latest costs are set to ignite further discussion among council members who have expressed frustration over the continuous stream of change orders and new contracts related to the project.

Wednesday’s council meeting is expected to feature a robust debate on these resolutions, as the community watches to see how the township plans to rein in the burgeoning costs of the Edison Jets Sports Building. Residents and taxpayers are increasingly scrutinizing the project’s financial oversight and demanding transparency regarding the reasons behind the persistent budget overruns.
