Edison, NJ – The Edison High girls basketball team emerged victorious over crosstown rival J.P. Stevens in the 10th annual John Spiess Memorial Classic held at Edison High School. The Eagles soared to victory behind a balanced offensive attack and tenacious defense, securing a hard-fought win in a game brimming with emotion and intensity.
Carmela Arana led the charge for Edison, with 13 points, 4 rebounds, and 4 assists. Kiara McKay provided a crucial scoring punch, adding 11 points for the Eagles. Edison improved to 2-1 on the season.
Despite the loss, J.P. Stevens’ Chloe Chan delivered a standout performance, recording a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds. However, the Hawks’ efforts weren’t enough to overcome a determined Edison squad. JP Stevens is 0-1 on the season.
The annual classic honors the legacy of John Spiess, a beloved figure in the Edison community who dedicated his life to youth sports and recreation. Spiess served as the Edison Recreation supervisor for over two decades, leaving an indelible mark on the town.
Spiess’s impact extended far beyond the recreation department. He founded and directed the New Jersey Rising Stars Girls AAU program, a testament to his commitment to fostering girls’ basketball. He also coached at various levels, including J.P. Stevens High School, where he initiated the “Think Pink” games to raise awareness for breast cancer.
