Edison Zoning Board Cancels Meeting Amidst Controversial Parking Lot Expansion

EDISON, NJ – The Edison Zoning Board of Adjustment has once again postponed a decision on the contentious application to expand the Ray Catena parking lot into a residential area on Old Post Road. The application, filed by Old Post Realty, LLC, was initially scheduled for review on September 17, 2024, but has now been pushed back to December 17, 2024.

This delay is the latest in a series of postponements that have fueled frustration among local residents opposed to the expansion. The proposal has sparked concerns about increased traffic congestion, noise pollution, and the potential impact on property values in the quiet neighborhood.

The proposed expansion seeks to add additional parking spaces to the existing Ray Catena dealership by encroaching into the residential zone along Old Post Road. Opponents argue that this expansion is unnecessary and would negatively impact the quality of life for those living nearby.

Adequate notice of the September 17th meeting, which was ultimately canceled, was provided in compliance with the Open Public Meetings Act of 1975. However, the repeated delays have raised questions about transparency and the decision-making process.

The Zoning Board’s agenda also notes that no further notice will be required for the rescheduled hearing on December 17th. This has added to the concerns of residents who fear they may not have adequate opportunity to voice their objections.

The Township of Edison has emphasized that the public is welcome to participate in the proceedings and that all relevant information can be found on the official Township website. They have also stressed the importance of avoiding any direct communication with board members, as this could compromise the impartiality of the process.

As the December 17th hearing approaches, tensions are likely to rise in this ongoing dispute. Residents opposed to the expansion are expected to turn out in force to make their voices heard, while the applicant will be seeking to make their case for the necessity of the expansion. The Zoning Board will ultimately have to weigh the competing interests and make a decision that balances the needs of the business community with the concerns of local residents.
