Edison Public Library Expands Horizons with New Digital Literacy Platforms

EDISON, NJ – In a significant step towards bridging the digital divide and fostering inclusivity, the Edison Public Library has announced the addition of two new online learning platforms, Northstar Digital Literacy and ASLdeafined.com, to its expanding database. This initiative underscores the library’s commitment to providing diverse educational resources and empowering community members with essential skills for the modern world.

“Our goal is to provide opportunities for everyone to learn new skills in a way that works for them,” stated Dana Galassa, Coordinator of Literacy Services for Edison Public Library. “We want to make learning as accessible as possible for everyone.”

Northstar Digital Literacy: Building Essential Computer Skills

Recognizing the crucial role of digital literacy in today’s society, the library is now offering access to Northstar Digital Literacy, a self-paced online platform designed to equip individuals with fundamental computer and software skills. The platform offers comprehensive modules covering:

    • Essential Computer Skills: Basic computer operations, internet usage, and email communication.
    • Essential Software Skills: Proficiency in commonly used software applications.
    • Technology Use in Daily Life: Applying technology in everyday situations.

“Northstar Online Learning, as well as the library’s digital skills programs, prove that anybody can become digitally literate. Digital literacy skills – or computer skills – are essentially no different than basic reading skills in the modern world,” Galassa emphasized.

Furthermore, cardholders who participate in the library’s digital skills labs and successfully complete assessments can earn Northstar Digital Literacy Certificates. These certificates serve as tangible proof of acquired skills, enhancing resumes and opening doors to professional and personal growth.

ASLdeafined.com: Embracing Inclusivity through American Sign Language

In a move to promote inclusivity and cater to the needs of the Deaf and hard-of-hearing community, the library has also introduced ASLdeafined.com. This online platform provides access to American Sign Language (ASL) learning tools developed by Deaf educators.

ASLdeafined.com offers a rich learning experience through:

    • Video lessons.
    • Interactive content.
    • Tailored lesson plans for various skill levels.

“We’re excited to provide ASLdeafined.com to our community. Not only is it an excellent tool for anyone interested in learning ASL, but it is a great resource that supports our ongoing commitment to inclusivity and serving the needs of our Deaf and hard-of-hearing patrons,” Galassa explained. “We’re proud to offer it as part of our commitment to accessible education.”

With ASLdeafined.com, learners can access materials at their convenience and progress at their own pace.

These new additions to the Edison Public Library’s digital resources underscore its dedication to empowering the community with vital skills and fostering an inclusive learning environment.
