In a game that mirrored the intensity and drama of a state playoff match, the Edison High School Eagles suffered a heartbreaking 20-13 loss to North Brunswick on their home turf. The game, a rollercoaster of momentum swings and dramatic plays, ultimately came down to the final seconds, leaving Edison fans with a mix of disappointment and pride.

North Brunswick asserted their dominance early on, racing to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter. Jahir Dawud punched in a one-yard touchdown run, and Tommy Koroma electrified the crowd with an 80-yard touchdown run. The second and third quarters were scoreless, creating an atmosphere of anticipation as Edison prepared to mount a comeback.

North Brunswick seemingly put the game out of reach early in the fourth quarter when Koroma scored his second touchdown of the night on a one-yard run. However, Edison responded immediately with a touchdown of their own, capitalizing on an 80-yard kickoff return by Nyekir Eato to close the gap to 20-7.

The Eagles’ defense then rose to the occasion, forcing a crucial four-and-out forcing North Bruswick to punt. Seizing the opportunity, Edison’s Savion Mitchell returned the punt 50 yards for a touchdown bringing the crowd to its feet. Edison missed the extra point to make it 20-13. The defense once again came up with a critical stop, giving Edison the ball back around their own 20 with 2 minutes left on the clock.

With time winding down, Edison drove the ball down to the 22-yard line. Quarterback Anthony Calantoni connected with a receiver in the end zone for a touchdown, but the play was ruled incomplete when the referee said the receiver was out of bounds. On fourth down, North Brunswick’s defense made a crucial stop, sealing their 20-13 victory.

The loss is a tough one for Edison, that many feel was decided by poor officiating, but they showed great resilience and determination in their comeback attempt. The game was reminiscent of the state playoff game two years ago, where Edison defeated North Brunswick in a dramatic fourth quarter comeback. Coach Matt Yascko said ” The guys played hard, we are getting better each week, we will be a different team by the end of the season.”

At halftime, the atmosphere at the Edison Eagles’ game was thick with emotion as they paid tribute to the late teacher, coach and athletic director Jim Muldowney. Number 24 was retired forever associating it with Muldowney’s name and legacy. Athletic director Dave Sandaal presented a plaque to Muldowney’s mother and wife, a gesture that underscored the deep respect and gratitude the community held for the coach. This solemn ceremony was a poignant reminder of Muldowney’s dedication and the passion he instilled in the program. The Eagles, playing with renewed vigor, showcased a valiant effort on the field, their performance a fitting testament to the memory of their beloved coach.
