John P. Stevens High School has taken a significant step to honor the enduring legacy of Harry J. Russell, a pioneer in both education and mental health, by naming its counseling wing “The Harry J. Russell Counseling Center.” The Edison Township Board of Education passsed the resolution at it’s February 25th meeting, recognizes Russell’s profound impact on the community and his unwavering commitment to student well-being.

Harry J. Russell’s career was defined by his dedication to mental health advocacy and educational advancement. Notably, he broke barriers as the first African American member of the Edison Township Board of Education, serving throughout the 1970s and 1980s. During his tenure, he tirelessly championed expanded opportunities for students, laying the groundwork for a more inclusive and supportive educational environment.

Beyond his contributions to the school board, Russell was a true visionary in the field of mental health. He founded Middlesex County’s first mental health halfway house, providing crucial support to those in need. Furthermore, he served as vice president for mental health and community services at JFK Medical Center, demonstrating his unwavering commitment to accessible and comprehensive mental healthcare.

The resolution passed by the Board of Education highlighted Russell’s “unparalleled advocacy for mental health” and his “lasting impact on the students of the Edison Township School District.” In recognition of these achievements, the naming of the counseling center serves as a permanent tribute to his dedication.

The Harry J. Russell Counseling Center will stand as a testament to his belief in the importance of supporting students’ personal growth and academic success. It will serve as a daily reminder of his pioneering spirit and his commitment to breaking down barriers. By placing his name on this vital resource, the school district ensures that his legacy will continue to inspire and guide future generations.

A copy of the resolution was presented to the family of Harry J. Russell, commemorating his “outstanding diligent and dedicated service” to the students of Edison Township. The resolution will also be recorded in the permanent minutes of the Edison Township Board of Education, solidifying his place in the district’s history.

The dedication of The Harry J. Russell Counseling Center marks a significant moment for John P. Stevens High School and the Edison Township community. It is a fitting tribute to a man who dedicated his life to improving the lives of others, and a powerful symbol of the district’s ongoing commitment to mental health and student well-being.
