METUCHEN, NJ – Saint Joseph High School proudly welcomes Karl Towns, Sr. as the new head coach of its basketball program. The announcement comes with great enthusiasm, as Towns Sr. is the father of Karl-Anthony Towns Jr., a 2014 graduate of St. Joe’s and a renowned NBA superstar currently playing for the Minnesota Timberwolves.

“We are thrilled to have Karl Towns Sr. return home to Saint Joe’s,” said John G. Nolan, Jr., the school’s president. “His impressive coaching career and dedication to developing well-rounded student-athletes make him the perfect fit to lead our basketball program.”

Towns Sr. brings a wealth of experience to the position, having previously led Piscataway Tech to four Greater Middlesex Conference Gold Division championships and a 2003 NJSIAA section title during his 15-season tenure. He has also served as a volunteer assistant coach at Kean University and Middlesex County College.

“This is a very coveted job for me,” Towns Sr. expressed. “I have fond memories of watching my son Karl and the 2013-2014 Falcons establish themselves as one of the best basketball teams in New Jersey history. While replicating that success is a tall order, we are committed to ensuring that Saint Joe’s basketball continues to nurture talented student-athletes on and off the court.”

Towns Sr. stepped away from coaching in 2014 to support his son’s burgeoning basketball career. Karl-Anthony Towns Jr.went on to become the Gatorade National Boys Basketball Athlete of the Year, an NCAA Division I All-American at the University of Kentucky, and the No. 1 pick in the 2015 NBA draft.

“The Towns family name has been synonymous with Saint Joseph Basketball for over a decade,” said Bill Tracy, the school’s Director of Athletics. “Karl Sr.’s teacher-first style of coaching aligns perfectly with our expectations, and we are confident that all current and future Falcons will benefit from his mentorship.”

In addition to his coaching achievements, Towns Sr. was a standout basketball player in his own right. He ranks 11th all-time in rebounds at Monmouth University and holds the single-season and single-game records for rebounds.

“Our mission extends beyond the basketball court,” Towns Sr. emphasized. “We are dedicated to developing well-rounded individuals who excel both academically and athletically. My proudest moments as a coach have been watching my players graduate and thrive in college. Success in the classroom paves the way for success in life, and I am committed to fostering an environment where our players can achieve both.”

The appointment of Karl Towns Sr. as head coach marks an exciting new chapter for Saint Joseph High School basketball. The school community eagerly anticipates the impact he will have on the program and the student-athletes he will guide.
