Elizabeth, NJ – A tense moment gripped Friday night’s football game between St. Thomas Aquinas and Elizabeth as Trojans’ star running back Chase Young suddenly collapsed on the field in the third quarter.
The frightening incident occurred late in the third quarter, with Aquinas leading 25-8. Young, who appeared healthy at halftime and had not been hit on the preceding play, unexpectedly fell to the ground near the 50-yard line.
Aquinas Athletic Director Jerry Smith confirmed that trainers had to revive Young, who was briefly without a pulse. Thankfully, by the time Young was placed in an ambulance, he was conscious and responsive.
As of late Friday night, there were no further updates on Young’s condition, but head coach Tarig Holman shared positive news.
“I’m just leaving the hospital right now and he’s good,” Holman stated. “He’s fine, he’s up, talking and joking around. It’s just a blessing. They’re just running some tests on him, but he’s fine.”
The game was suspended following the incident, with both teams visibly shaken. The athletic directors from both schools met and decided not to resume play, with the Trojans’ 25-8 lead standing as the final score.
“To me, I think today was a really good example that some things are bigger than football,” Holman reflected. “The kids were really upset and they still wanted to support him. People were praying for Chase constantly and that was really good to see. And they were all delighted to hear that he’s okay.”
In the aftermath of the incident, counselors will be available at the school to provide support to students as Young recovers.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the potential risks associated with sports, even for seemingly healthy young athletes.
