EDISON, N.J. – A tragic motorcycle accident on Route 1 in Edison claimed the life of an Essex County man on Sunday evening. The victim has been identified as 45-year-old Alexander Teshima Chong of Belleville.
According to Police Chief Thomas Bryan, the incident occurred around 8:15 p.m. when a group of motorcycles were traveling northbound near Old Post Road. Two of the motorcycles collided, causing one rider to be ejected and subsequently hit a car that was stopped at a traffic light. Both riders were thrown from their bikes, with one tragically ending up under the car.
Despite efforts from first responders, Chong was pronounced dead at the scene. The other motorcyclist involved in the crash was transported to a local hospital and is currently listed in stable condition.
Chief Bryan stated that speed is believed to have played a significant role in the collision. The section of Route 1 where the accident occurred was closed for approximately 90 minutes as authorities investigated the scene and cleared debris. Traffic was diverted to nearby side streets during this time.
This is the latest in a series of fatal accidents on Route 1 in recent months, raising concerns about road safety in the area. Local authorities are urging all motorists to exercise caution and adhere to posted speed limits to prevent further tragedies.
