EDISON, NJ – The Edison Town Council meeting scheduled last night, January 22, 2025, was abruptly cancelled due to a lack of quorum, leaving residents who attended the meeting frustrated and uninformed.
The four Council members that regularly vote for Mayor Joshi’s agenda were a no show. Council Vice President John Poyner, along with Councilmen Asaf Schmuel, Joe Coyle, and Nish Patel were no-shows, preventing the meeting from officially convening. Adding to the confusion and frustration, no prior notification was given to the public about the cancellation. Residents who arrived at the meeting were greeted with a sign stating that the meeting was cancelled, with no explanation provided.
“It’s incredibly disrespectful to the residents,” stated Raj Patel. “We took time out of our schedules to come here, and the least they could do is provide a proper notice and explanation for the cancellation.”
The lack of communication and transparency surrounding the cancellation has raised concerns about the Council’s commitment to public engagement. “This isn’t the first time a meeting has been cancelled with little to no notice,” another resident commented. “It makes you wonder if they’re truly interested in hearing from the community.”
The absence of four council members raises questions about the circumstances that led to the lack of quorum. At the time of this article, no official statement has been released explaining the reasons for the council members’ absences.
Residents are left wondering if the meeting will be rescheduled and if their concerns will be addressed. The next scheduled council meeting is Febuary 10th at 6:00pm. It remains to be seen if the council will take steps to improve communication and ensure that a similar situation does not occur in the future.
Mayor Joshi and Chief of Staff Bob Diehl did not respond to request for comment.
