Edison High School’s baseball team punched their ticket to the quarterfinals of the Jim Muldowney GMC Championship Tournament in dramatic fashion, overcoming Old Bridge in a grueling 12-inning battle that ended with a 2-1 victory. The Eagles (11-9) and the Knights (11-9) locked horns in a true marathon contest at Fred Cole Field, showcasing resilience and determination from both sides.
The scoreboard remained stubbornly tied at 1-1 after each team scored a single run in the third inning. What followed was a tense nine-inning stalemate, a testament to strong pitching and tight defense. Edison finally broke the deadlock in the top of the 12th inning, pushing across the decisive run to take a 2-1 lead. They then held off a determined Old Bridge squad in the bottom of the inning to secure the hard-fought win.

Several Eagles delivered standout performances in the extended contest. Robert Roma was a consistent force at the plate, going a perfect 3-for-3 and three walks, also contributing an RBI. Dom Innocenti also had a productive day offensively, going 3-for-6 and driving in the go-ahead run in the 12th inning with a clutch base hit up the middle.
On the pitching side, Connor Murphy started strong for Edison, surrendering just one run over seven solid innings while striking out six Old Bridge batters. Dom Innocenti then took the mound and held the Knights scoreless for three innings, racking up five strikeouts without allowing a run. Sophomore Ray Tavarez closed out the epic victory for the Eagles, pitching two scoreless innings to seal the 2-1 win.
With this hard-earned triumph, Edison which is the 11th seed advances to the GMC quarterfinals where they are set to face 3rd seed St. Thomas Aquinas. The quarterfinal matchup is scheduled for Wednesday, May 14th, at 7 pm on Field 2 at North Brunswick Community Park. Edison will look to carry the momentum from this thrilling victory into their next challenge in the Jim Muldowney GMC Championship Tournament.
