Edison, NJ – The community of Edison, and the broader firefighting family mourn the loss of Chief Robert Campbell, retired Chief of the Edison Division of Fire. Chief Campbell passed away Thursday, February 15, 2024. He was a devoted firefighter, leader, educator, and community volunteer who left a lasting impact on those who knew him.
Chief Campbell was appointed to the Edison Division of Fire in 1971, beginning his lifelong dedication to fire service. His unwavering commitment and expertise saw him rise steadily through the ranks, culminating in his appointment as Chief of the department in January 1999. He served with distinction in this role until his retirement in 2006.
Even in retirement, Chief Campbell remained dedicated to firefighting. From 2006 to 2007, he served as an instructor at the Middlesex County Fire Academy in Sayreville, NJ, sharing his extensive knowledge and experience to mold the next generation of firefighters.
Chief Campbell’s commitment to education extended beyond his profession. He was a member of the first graduating class of Edison’s J.P. Stevens High School in 1965. He attended Union Junior College before completing his B.A. in Political Science at Clemson University. A firm believer in lifelong learning, he went on to complete the semester-long Harvard Trade Union Program and earn his M.A. in Labor Studies from Rutgers University.
Later in life, Chief Campbell settled in Oconee County, SC, and remained an active and integral part of the community. He was involved with the local chapter of Habitat for Humanity and volunteered with the Clemson University Fire Department. He further explored his creative interests, taking up blacksmithing and volunteering at the Hagood Village Historic Village in Pickens County, SC.
Chief Campbell’s family and friends will receive visitors from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, February 23, 2024, at Boylan Funeral Home – Edison. The Graveside Service with Honors will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, February 24, 2024, at Graceland Memorial Park. Following the service, a celebration of his life will be held at The Raritan River Boat Club in Edison.
Chief Campbell is survived by is his wife of 52 years, Donna Jean Campbell; daughter, Erin Virginia Leftwich (Wayne); granddaughters, Alice Leftwich and Clara Leftwich, of Roanoke, VA; sister, Patricia Campbell McAvoy; nephews, Jonathan McAvoy and Brendan McAvoy, of Pt. Pleasant Beach, NJ; sister-in-law, Claudia Beaty (David); nephew, Kevin (Casey) Beaty; and niece, Sally Beaty Wallace, of Douglasville, GA.
