Edison, NJ – The Edison Fire Department (EFD) is mourning the loss of Firefighter Howard Tarlow, a dedicated member of the department and a passionate advocate for firefighters across the state. Tarlow’s passing leaves a void in the department and the community he served.

Tarlow’s journey in the fire service began in 2008 when he joined the Highland Park Volunteer Fire Department, driven by a desire to give back to the community. His commitment quickly led him to transfer to Raritan Engine Company 1 in Edison, where he served his hometown with distinction.

On October 9, 2012, Tarlow achieved his goal of becoming a career firefighter, joining the Edison Division of Fire and being assigned to C Platoon. His dedication and passion for the fire service did not stop there.

In 2021, Tarlow took on the role of Local 1197 Professional Firefighters Association of NJ State (PFANJ) Delegate, working tirelessly to address issues impacting firefighters across the state. His leadership and advocacy led to his election as Treasurer of Local 1197 in July 2022, where he continued to strengthen the union and improve the lives of firefighters.

Tarlow’s impact extended beyond his professional accomplishments. He inspired his son, Mark, to follow in his footsteps, joining the Edison Division of Fire in 2020. This legacy of service is a testament to Tarlow’s dedication to his family and his community.

The Edison Fire Department remembers Tarlow as a dedicated firefighter, a passionate advocate, and a valued member of their family. His passing is a loss not only for the department but for the entire community he served.

In the words of Edison Fire Chief Andy Toth “Firefighter Tarlow made a big impact on not only the membership, but also his son Mark…He will be greatly missed.”
