Edison, NJ – Tonight, under the Friday night lights, Edison High School will not only face North Brunswick on the football field but also pay tribute to one of its most iconic figures. At halftime, the school will retire the number 24 in honor of the late James “Diamond Jim” Muldowney, a beloved coach and educator whose impact on Edison athletics is immeasurable.

Muldowney, an Edison High alumnus, devoted nearly four decades to the district, serving in various roles. But it was his tenure as the baseball coach from 1988 to 2000 that etched his name in Edison lore. With a staggering 275-75 record and 24 championships, including two Overall Group 4 titles, Muldowney’s teams were a force to be reckoned with.

More than just wins and losses, Muldowney instilled values of discipline, teamwork, and sportsmanship in his players, shaping them into well-rounded individuals. He is widely considered the greatest high school baseball coach in Middlesex County history.

To honor his legacy, the Edison Township Board of Education will retire his jersey number 24 across all Edison High athletic teams. Tonight’s halftime ceremony will be a poignant moment as a copy of the resolution is presented to the Muldowney family.

Number 24 will forever hang in the rafters, a symbol of Muldowney’s enduring legacy and an inspiration to future generations of Edison Eagles. It’s a reminder that beyond the scoreboard, the true measure of a coach lies in the lives they touch and the values they impart. Kickoff is 7:00pm at Edison High School.
