EDISON, NJ – May 29, 2025 – The Edison High School softball team delivered a dramatic performance on Thursday, securing a walk-off 5-3 victory over Nottingham in the opening round of the Group 4 State Tournament. The game was a nail-biter, tied at three runs apiece heading into the bottom of the eighth inning, when freshman Jenna Fugate stepped up to the plate and blasted a two-run homer to left field, sealing the win for the Eagles.

Edison initially took the lead in the second inning thanks to an RBI single by Lindsey Yascko. However, Nottingham quickly answered in the top of the third, capitalizing on an Edison error and an RBI single from Jamie Montgomery to pull ahead.

The Eagles, known for their resilience, fought back in the bottom of the seventh. With the game on the line, Yascko was hit by a pitch, and Casey Della Fave drew a walk, each bringing in a crucial run to tie the score and send the game into extra innings.

Fugate not only provided the game-winning heroics with her bat but also dominated on the mound for Edison. The starting pitcher allowed 11 hits and three runs (zero earned) over a masterful eight innings, striking out eight batters and issuing just one walk.

Nottingham’s Mikayla Umansky started the game, surrendering one run on eight hits over three and one-half innings, while striking out four and walking two. Zoe Vanselous took the loss in relief for Nottingham, going four innings and allowing five runs (four earned) on five hits, with one strikeout and four walks.

Edison’s offense was potent throughout the contest, racking up 13 hits. Kaylin Kline and Callie DiBisceglie were a formidable duo at the plate, each collecting three hits. Fugate, Yascko, and Della Fave were also instrumental, each driving in two runs. Nalini Parekh contributed two hits in four at-bats. Demonstrating their patience and discipline, Edison also drew six walks in the game.

Nottingham’s offense recorded 11 hits, with Ang Roman leading the way with three hits in four at-bats. Vanselous and Montgomery each drove in one run for the Northstars, and Umansky added two hits in four at-bats.

With this thrilling victory under their belts, Edison will now prepare for their quarterfinal matchup on Friday, May 30th, as they travel to face the Marlboro Varsity Mustangs.
