METUCHEN, N.J. – A devastating fire tore through an apartment complex in Metuchen on Saturday morning, resulting in two injuries and leaving nearly two dozen residents without homes.
The Metuchen Fire Company responded to the blaze at Redfield Village around 11 a.m. Saturday and encountered heavy smoke and flames engulfing two floors and multiple sides of the building. Seventeen firefighters battled the fire for five hours, and the scene remained under investigation as of Saturday evening.
The New Jersey Red Cross is providing temporary housing assistance to eight families, totaling 20 individuals, who were displaced by the fire. Metuchen Mayor Jonathan M. Busch confirmed that two people were injured and eight units were rendered uninhabitable.
One of the injured residents was released from the hospital on Saturday, while the other remained hospitalized, according to Metuchen police Lt. Wayne Karalevich. The hospital declined to comment on the condition of the hospitalized individual.
The borough’s Office of Emergency Management is collaborating with the Red Cross to secure temporary lodging for the affected families. Mayor Busch also announced that a fundraiser has been established through the It Takes a Borough organization to support those displaced by the fire.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
