Edison, NJ – Senator Michael Testa Jr. has launched an investigation into the allocation of $193 million in unexplained special line-items within the state budget, expressing outrage after learning the funds were funneled exclusively to a single Middlesex County project in Edison Township. Testa’s concerns center around the lack of transparency surrounding these allocations and the potential misuse of taxpayer money, particularly funds designated for property tax relief.
The senator’s scrutiny was triggered by a recent news report revealing that all 18 special line-items, proposed by the Governor and various legislators, ultimately benefited a project in Edison Township. These line-items, totaling $193 million, were characterized by vague descriptions and a distinct lack of public explanation, raising immediate red flags for Testa.
Of particular concern is the revelation that $153 million of the allocated funds were drawn from the Property Tax Relief Fund. These funds, according to the news report, were then used to finance the construction of a new county college baseball stadium. The stadium boasts amenities far beyond the scope of typical college facilities, including VIP luxury boxes, multiple party decks, a massive jumbotron, and a bar.
Senator Testa is now demanding answers regarding the constitutionality of this funding. He points out that the New Jersey Constitution mandates that the Property Tax Relief Fund be appropriated based on reasonable formulas and used exclusively for property tax relief. He is questioning whether state officials were even aware of this constitutional requirement when they approved the line-items.
“How can anyone justify using property tax relief funds for a luxury baseball stadium?” Testa stated. “This is a blatant disregard for the taxpayers of New Jersey and a clear violation of the constitutional principles governing the use of these funds.”
