The Edison Fire Department is mourning the loss of one of its own, Bruce J. Gregory, who passed away on December 11, 2024, at the age of 76 after a courageous battle with cancer. Gregory, a 27-year veteran of the department, was a beloved colleague and dedicated public servant who will be deeply missed.
Born in Perth Amboy on November 20, 1948, Gregory’s life was intertwined with the water. He began his career working on various vessels in the waters around New York and New Jersey, including the Teal on Staten Island, the Captain John in Keyport, and the Sea Pigeon in Perth Amboy. He also spent time as a member of the Local 65 Carpenter’s Union in Perth Amboy before ultimately finding his calling as a firefighter with the Edison Fire Department.
Gregory’s dedication to his community was unwavering. He was part of the Edison Fire Department team that responded to the devastating events of 9/11, working tirelessly on “The Pile” in the aftermath of the attacks. His bravery and commitment to service during this challenging time exemplified his character.
“Bruce was a true hero,” said Edison Fire Chief Andy Toth. “He was always there for his fellow firefighters and for the community he served. His loss is deeply felt by all of us.”
Beyond his dedication to firefighting, Gregory was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed fishing, hunting, and crabbing, particularly on Long Beach Island.
The Edison Fire Department extends its deepest condolences to the Gregory family during this difficult time.
