Dave Tingle, an Air Force veteran and Edison Police Department lieutenant, has faced a significant hurdle in his bid for the Assembly in New Jersey’s 18th legislative district. Despite a petition challenge that initially threatened to derail his campaign, Tingle has reaffirmed his commitment to the people, vowing to continue the fight as an independent candidate.
Initially, Tingle launched his campaign as a Democrat, seeking to unseat incumbent Assemblymen Robert Karabinchak (D-Edison) and Sterley Stanley (D-East Brunswick). His candidacy, backed by Jersey City Mayor Steve Fulop, presented the possibility of a significant shift within the Middlesex County district. Nevertheless, the incumbents promptly contested Tingle’s petition, citing alleged inaccuracies in the signature tally.
Subsequently, Stanley and Karabinchak successfully challenged his petition. An administrative review conducted by Administrative Law Judge Tama Hughes determined that a portion of the signatures were invalid, reducing Tingle’s count below the required minimum. Confronted with this adverse finding, Tingle elected to voluntarily withdraw his candidacy in the Democratic primary.
Despite this challenge, Tingle’s resolve remains unshaken. In a message to his supporters, he emphasized his commitment to transparency and independence, stating, “I’ve always been transparent about who I am and my commitment not to be owned by anyone.” He further declared, “My promise to the people is that I will not quit. We will continue this fight and run in the general election as an independent.”
Tingle’s statement showed his belief that the challenge only strengthened his determination. He expressed gratitude for the support he received, viewing the situation as a catalyst for his movement’s growth. “I deeply appreciate all the support I’ve received so far. I believe this is just the beginning, and our movement will only grow stronger from here. Let’s keep pushing forward together!” he said.
This shift to an independent run highlights Tingle’s determination to challenge the status quo, even in the face of significant obstacles. His campaign, now operating outside the traditional party structure, will test the strength of his grassroots support and his ability to connect directly with voters. The #IndependentStrong hashtag he employs reflects his strategy to rally those who feel disenfranchised by established political forces.
The 18th district, anchored by Edison and East Brunswick, will now witness a unique electoral contest, pitting established incumbents against a determined independent candidate. Tingle’s campaign will be watched closely, as it represents a challenge not only to the incumbents, but also to the conventional political landscape.
