Edison Elks Lodge Supports Student Veterans

Edison, NJ – On Thursday, September 18th, the Edison Elks Lodge #2487 continued its commitment to supporting Middlesex College students with a generous donation of $1000 in gift cards. This donation was made possible by the Elks National Foundation Freedom Grant, specifically intended to help student veterans in need.

Exalted Ruler Tim Langan and Grant Coordinator Ron Hayes visited the college, meeting with representatives from the Military and Veteran Services and Student and Enrollment Services, along with a student veteran, to present the gift cards. The funds will go a long way in assisting student veterans with basic needs such as food and gas, allowing them to focus on their education.

The Freedom Grant is just one of four grants totaling $9500 the Edison Elks has secured this year. They also toured the Middlesex College Food Pantry and met with its coordinator, Amanda Lyons, to discuss student needs. The Elks will present an additional $4500 from the Gratitude and Spotlight grants to the college later this year, further bolstering the food pantry, particularly during the holiday season.

This ongoing support of Middlesex College students was initiated by Elks member Mary Tutalo, who serves as Student Life Coordinator for the college. She recognized a need and connected the college with the Lodge. Over the last ten years, the Edison Elks have received nearly $80,000 in grants and donated nearly $550,000 to local food pantries and other charities.

Supporting the community is a central mission of any Elks Lodge, and Langan, Hayes, and the entire Edison Lodge take great pride in the gratitude received for their efforts. For those interested in joining the Elks and contributing to the support of veterans and the community, more information can be found at join.elks.org.
