EDISON, NJ – Amitoj Oberoi, a 30-year-old former Edison police officer, pleaded guilty on June 18th to two counts of first-degree vehicular homicide and driving while intoxicated. The charges stem from a tragic incident on August 27, 2023, where Oberoi, while off-duty, was involved in a fatal car crash on Route 27 in Franklin Township.
The crash resulted in the deaths of two passengers in Oberoi’s vehicle, 24-year-old Carlos A. Perez-Gaytan and 20-year-old Victor Cabrera-Francisco. According to the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office, Oberoi was driving under the influence of alcohol when the crash occurred.
Under the terms of his plea agreement, Oberoi faces up to 15 years in state prison. He is scheduled to be sentenced on August 14th by Superior Court Judge Jonathan W. Romankow. Oberoi will be required to serve 85% of his sentence before becoming eligible for parole.
The Edison Police Department has expressed its condolences to the families of the victims and has pledged to cooperate fully with the ongoing legal proceedings.
