Today, July 27, 2024, marks the 40th anniversary of the tragic loss of Captain John E. Lindquist Sr. of the Edison Division of Fire. Capt. Lindquist lost his life in the line of duty while battling a house fire on Ellen Street on this day in 1984.
Capt. Lindquist’s dedication to the Edison community spanned over two decades. He joined the Division of Fire on July 1, 1959, and steadily rose through the ranks, earning a promotion to Captain on May 14, 1973. His leadership and courage were evident throughout his career, culminating in his final act of bravery that fateful day in 1984.
The Edison community has ensured that Capt. Lindquist’s sacrifice is never forgotten. A monument stands in his honor in Lindquist Park, a lasting tribute to his service. Additionally, every fire station in the division displays a memorial plaque, reminding firefighters and residents alike of his dedication. Capt. Lindquist’s memory is particularly cherished at House 5, his home station, where a memorial on Engine 11 serves as a constant reminder of his legacy.
